Ether, Energy Awareness, and Reiki
Exploring the Subtle Field of Connection
Across many healing traditions there is a shared idea that before anything takes form there is space. In yoga philosophy this element is called Ether, sometimes referred to as Akasha. Ether represents the subtle field where awareness, vibration, and connection arise. It is often described as the space that allows all other elements to exist.
For those of us working with Reiki, energy healing, and nervous system informed practices, Ether offers a helpful way to understand the subtle layer of experience that many people begin to notice when they slow down and bring attention to their body.
You may have felt it before without realizing it. Perhaps you noticed warmth between your hands when they come close together, or a subtle shift in the atmosphere when entering a room. These experiences are often described in energy practices as awareness of the body’s energy field.
Today, March 11, 2026, we will explore this idea together in the workshop “Ether”, part of the Compassionate Touch: Elemental Journey series at the Watertown Center for the Healing Arts. The series is cofacilitated by Becca Phillips, Tim Lewandowski, and me! and invites participants to explore the elements through embodied practices and compassionate touch.
The workshop brings together people from across the Greater Boston area, including Watertown, Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston, who are curious about Reiki, energy healing, and embodied approaches to personal healing.
What Is Ether in Energy Practices?
In traditional yoga philosophy, Ether is considered the most subtle of the five elements. Earth, water, fire, and air represent physical and energetic qualities we can easily perceive. Ether represents the space in which those qualities arise.
When applied to healing practices such as Reiki, meditation, or somatic awareness, Ether can be understood as the field of awareness that allows us to sense subtle sensations in the body.
Rather than being something mystical or distant, Ether points to something very practical. It reminds us that healing often begins with creating space for awareness.
When we slow down, breathe, and bring attention to the body, we begin to notice sensations that were always present but often ignored.
This is often the starting point for many people exploring Reiki and energy healing practices in Boston and the surrounding communities.
The Body’s Energy Field and the Biofield
In modern research and integrative medicine, the concept closest to what many traditions describe as energy is the biofield.
The biofield is generally defined as the complex electromagnetic and subtle energy field that surrounds and regulates living organisms. The National Institutes of Health describes the biofield as a field of energy and information that surrounds the human body and may play a role in regulating biological processes.
Research in biofield science suggests that the body generates measurable electromagnetic activity through the heart, brain, and nervous system. These fields can extend beyond the physical body and interact with the surrounding environment.
While the scientific understanding of the biofield continues to evolve, this framework offers an interesting bridge between ancient healing traditions and modern physiology.
Practices such as Reiki, therapeutic touch, meditation, and qigong often describe working with this subtle field through awareness, intention, and gentle contact.
Reiki, Energy Healing, and the Nervous System
In Reiki practice, the goal is not to force or manipulate energy. Instead we cultivate awareness and allow the body’s natural healing processes to emerge.
Many people who receive Reiki describe sensations such as warmth, tingling, relaxation, or a deep sense of calm. These experiences often correspond with shifts in the nervous system, moving from a state of stress toward parasympathetic regulation. This is the part of the nervous system responsible for rest, repair, and recovery.
Several clinical studies suggest that Reiki may support relaxation, reduce anxiety, and improve well being in various populations.
For example, a randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that Reiki sessions were associated with significant reductions in stress and anxiety.
Another review published in Global Advances in Health and Medicine reported that Reiki appears to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, helping the body shift into a more regulated and restorative state.
Because of these effects, Reiki is increasingly explored alongside somatic and trauma-informed approaches to healing, especially for individuals seeking gentle ways to support nervous system regulation.
People across Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, and Watertown are increasingly turning to Reiki sessions and energy healing practices as complementary approaches to stress reduction and emotional well being.
Ether and Compassionate Touch
The element Ether reminds us that healing is not only about techniques. It is also about presence and space.
In practices that involve compassionate touch, including Reiki and somatic healing modalities, the quality of attention and presence between people can be just as important as the physical contact itself.
When we become aware of our own body and energy first, we are often able to connect with others from a place of greater grounding and care.
This is one of the intentions behind the Compassionate Touch: Elemental Journeyworkshop series.
Each gathering explores a different element through movement, awareness practices, and relational exercises that help participants reconnect with their own bodies while developing a deeper sense of empathy and connection with others.
Exploring Ether Together
In tonight’s workshop we will explore Ether through a series of simple practices.
Participants will learn how to sense their own energy through gentle awareness exercises. We will explore grounding practices that connect us with the steady rhythm of the earth. We will also move through simple embodied movements inspired by qigong and finish with a practice inspired by Reiki Dance, where movement, awareness, and compassionate touch come together in a supportive group environment.
No previous experience with Reiki or energy healing is required. Curiosity and openness are enough.
Reiki and Energy Healing in the Greater Boston Area
Interest in Reiki in Boston and the surrounding communities continues to grow as more people look for holistic approaches to stress relief, emotional healing, and nervous system regulation.
My goal is to offer sessions and workshops that integrate Reiki with somatic awareness, grounding practices, meditation, and gentle movement to support deep relaxation and reconnection with the body.
Whether through individual Reiki sessions, Reiki trainings, group meditations, or Reiki Dance gatherings, the intention is always the same. To create a welcoming space where people can reconnect with their own innate capacity for healing.
